Beautiful day, 32 degrees and sunny. First stop, tour of Kilmainham Gaol Jail, which is the old jail downtown Dublin where many criminals and political figures were kept in the early 1900's. The jail was freezing and very eerie. If a criminal was to be executed, they would hang him or her outside the front of the jail entrance which was directly facing the road. They would use a short rope which lead to a slow and painful suffocation. After we left the jail, we headed downtown Dublin to meet a man by the name of Lorcan Collins. He is an author, and an interesting fellow who has a witty sense of humor who took us on a tour of Dublin and explained their history. In 1916 a small band of armed insurrectionists declared Ireland a Republic. This event is known as the Easter Rising, a violent battle which resulted in many deaths and the destruction of many parts of Dublin. This tour around the city was amazing and it really allowed me to understand Irish history and why it is so important. For instance, there are bullet holes in many of the statues throughout the town, the Irish leave these in place to remind people of where they came from and where they are now. After the tour we headed back to the hotel and I grabbed fish and chips from a little market down the street. I was exhausted from the tour and still some jet lag, so I called it an early night.
